Laser Hair Removal

Overview of permanent hair removal with Lasers and Light therapy

A smooth hair free skin might means a lifetime of waxing or shaving. Lasers on the other hand destroy hair follicles in a matter of seconds, permanently, helping you save both time and money in the long run.

Laser or IPL (Intense Pulse Light) produce an intense pulse of highly concentrated light energy which is selectively absorbed by the hair. Laser energy is absorbed by the hair much like dark clothes absorb sunlight. The hair along with the hair producing cells in the hair roots get heated up and are destroyed. All of this happens in a fraction of a second.

What happens during Laser Hair Removal procedure

Just before the treatment, hair that will be undergoing treatment are trimmed.

You will be given protective eye cover to wear at all times during the procedure.

It will also be necessary to protect the outer layers of your skin with a cold gel or special cooling device. This will help the laser light penetrate the skin.

Next, the health care provider will give a test pulse to the treatment area and watch the area for several minutes to make sure the best settings were used and to check for bad reactions.

After proper adjustment of settings laser shots are given in one small area at a time. Each laser shot area is approximately the size of a small coin. When the procedure is completed, you are given ice packs, anti-inflammatory creams or lotions, or cold water to ease any discomfort.

Laser hair reduction treatment is not painful. The laser machine has a built in cooling system which cools the skin and reduces any pain sensation. Most of our patients describe the feeling of laser pulse similar to the snap of a rubber band. In highly pain sensitive individuals we use topical anesthetic cream to make the treatment area numb before the treatment.

What are the benefits ?

Prolonged waxing and shaving can damage the skin. Chemical formulas to remove hair also damage the skin. These may cause skin roughness and darkening. Waxing has also been known to associated with resistant viral infections of the skin. Laser hair reduction can give complete freedom from repeated waxing and shaving. It gives you smooth skin with out any roughness of stubbles which is seen after a few days of shaving or waxing.

  • Laser Hair Reduction can be performed over the entire body.
  • Removal of unwanted facial hair, like in PCOS.
  • Underarms hair removal.

  • Arms and legs hair removal.
  • Beard shaping in men.
  • Chest hair reduction in men.

Who are the best candidates for Laser hair reduction ?

Laser energy is preferentially absorbed by dark hair much more than light colored hair. So, the best candidates are individuals with coarse, dark, black hair and fair skin. All skin types can be treated safely with the use of different types lasers depending on the skin type. Light hair especially gray and white are minimally affected by lasers thus laser hair reduction treatment remains less efficient. Very fine hair which are hardly visible are also not destroyed by laser energy. If you are planning on undergoing laser hair removal, you should limit plucking, waxing, and electrolysis for six weeks before treatment. That's because the laser targets the hairs' roots, which are temporarily removed by waxing or plucking. You should also avoid sun exposure for six weeks before and after treatment. Sun exposure makes laser hair removal less effective and makes complications after treatment more likely.

When will i see the results ?

Results can be seen from very first treatment session but Hair Reduction treatment requires multiple sessions. After each session there is 15 to 20% hair reduction. Number of treatment sessions required depend upon the type of skin and color of the hair. Usually it takes around 6 to 8 sessions but some may require as many as 10 sessions and may require further maintenance sessions at half yearly intervals.

How safe is it, what are the risks ?

Laser hair reduction is an extremely safe process. Our trained team of Medical and nursing professionals have performed many procedures. We give utmost importance to patient safety. This is also one of the most performed cosmetic treatment procedure throughout the world. An inexperienced health care provider may end up burning your skin.

In some people hair reduction treatment can cause pigmentation changes in the skin. Some types of skin may become hyper pigmented and will be required to be further treated with cream or ointment. Others may develop hypopigmented spots which are lighter than the surrounding skin.

In some individuals acne can flare up after facial hair removal treatment or beard shaping treatment.

Some people may not have expected results because of resistant hair.

What are the After-Procedure instructions and precautions ?

For a day or two afterward, the treated area of your skin will look and feel like it's sunburned. Cool compresses and moisturizers will help. If your face was treated, you can wear makeup the next day unless your skin is blistering. Over the next month, your treated hair will fall out. Wear sunscreen for the following month to help prevent temporary changes in the color of the treated skin.
